Localism bill becomes law

The Localism Bill has become an Act and passed in to law.

Whilst it might take some time for some aspects of the Act come in to force the main areas are expected to be implemented by April 2012. These areas include:

  • new freedoms and flexibilities for local government
  • new rights and powers for communities and individuals
  • reform to make the planning system more democratic and more effective including the duty to consult before submission of a planning application
  • reform to ensure that decisions about housing are taken locally
